Alkyd Resin Manufacturing Unit

This project profile covers the manufacturing of alkyd resin, which is a major thermoset polyester resin used as a film-forming agent in paints, varnishes, enamels, and protective coatings. The facility utilizes a two-stage solvent process to produce alkyd resin packaged in barrels for supply to the synthetic paint and coatings industry.

Manufacturing process

  1. Perform alcoholysis reaction by reacting drying oil (linseed oil) and polyalcohol (pentaerythritol) in the first stage of the two-stage solvent process.
  2. Verify monoglyceride formation using methanol solubility and compatibility tests.
  3. Esterify the monoglyceride with phthalic anhydride and solvent in the second stage under controlled temperature to convert it into alkyd resin.
  4. Cool, filter using sparkler filters, and blend the resulting alkyd resin.
  5. Package the finished alkyd resin into barrels for storage and dispatch.

Market

Alkyd resin has huge demand driven by the growing paint, varnish, and construction sectors in India, which consume large quantities of synthetic enamels and protective coatings.
