Biodegradable Plastic Bags (PLA Based)

This project profile outlines the manufacturing of biodegradable plastic bags using Polylactic Acid (PLA) blends. The process involves compounding raw PLA pellets with additives, film extrusion and blowing, optional printing, and automated cutting and sealing to produce eco-friendly packaging solutions.

Manufacturing process

  1. Blend PLA granules with appropriate additives and color pigments in a vertical mixing vessel to homogenize the mixture.
  2. Feed the blended PLA material into the hopper of a plastic extrusion and blown film machine.
  3. Heat the blend into a uniform polymer melt inside the extruder and blow it vertically via a circular die into an inflated plastic sheet.
  4. Cool and flatten the inflated film tube using nip rollers to control thickness and width.
  5. Optionally unwind the film roll to pass through a printing unit for branding and logos.
  6. Cut and seal the film into final bag dimensions using hot knives that simultaneously seal the edges.
  7. Collect scrap material for recycling back into the process, then pack the finished bags into bundles for storage and dispatch.

Market

Demand for biodegradable plastics is growing rapidly due to global bans on single-use conventional plastics and rising eco-consciousness. PLA-based bags serve as a sustainable alternative for retail grocery bags, food storage, garbage bags, and agricultural mulch films.
