Cigarette Paper Manufacturing Unit

This project profile outlines the establishment of a manufacturing unit for cigarette rolling paper using natural raw materials like wood pulp, paddy stalk, hemp, and flax. The facility undertakes pulp-making, bleaching, stock preparation, sheet formation, pressing, drying, calendering, and slitting to produce specialized paper products.

Raw materials & machinery

Manufacturing process

  1. Collection and de-barking of raw wooden logs using a debarking machine.
  2. Chipping the debarked wood into uniform sizes using a wood chipper machine followed by screening.
  3. Boiling the chips and transferring them to a digester with pulping chemicals to dissolve lignin and convert wood into pulp.
  4. Filtration and washing of the black liquor from the pulp, followed by disaggregation and refining.
  5. Bleaching the pulp using oxygen delignification to remove residual lignin and achieve desired brightness.
  6. Stock preparation by mixing the pulp with fillers like calcium carbonate, titanium dioxide, and whitening agents.
  7. Sheet formation by feeding the stock onto a moving belt of fine mesh screening and drawing off water using suction rollers.
  8. Pressing the sheet further between wool felt rollers to extract moisture.
  9. Drying the pressed paper using contact, convective, or infrared drying to enhance fiber-fiber bonding and strength.
  10. Calendering and supercalendering to reduce thickness, level surface roughness, and improve gloss.
  11. Reel-slitting the smooth paper into desired widths using rotating circular knives.
  12. Packing the finished cigarette paper into corrugated boxes for distribution.

Market

Cigarette rolling papers are used in commercially made filter cigarettes and roll-your-own cigarettes, with growing demand driven by alternative non-wood fibers like hemp and paddy stalk to reduce environmental impact.
