Manufacturing process

  1. Mix rubber and various ingredients for backing on a two-roll mill and allow to mature overnight.
  2. Make the prepared compound into a sheet of desired thickness on a mixing mill or calendar.
  3. Prepare blanks of compounded rubber sheet equal in size to the coir mat to be backed.
  4. Place the rubber compound sheet and coir material inside a heated, mould-released mould.
  5. Press the combination in a hydraulic press at the appropriate temperature, pressure, and time.
  6. Remove the product from the mould, cool, and trim.

Market

Driven by the growth of the furniture industry and the high cost of foam rubber, rubberized coir serves as a popular substitute for foam rubber in mattresses and upholstery. Coir geo-textiles also have wide applications in railways and road embankments.
