Rubber Moulded Coir Matting

Rubber backed coir products are widely used as durable flooring materials, manufactured by hot pressing compounded rubber onto the back of coir mats and mattings. The process involves blending rubber with ingredients, preparing rubber sheets, and vulcanizing them onto coir material using a hydraulic press.

Manufacturing process

  1. Mix rubber and various compounding ingredients on a two roll mill and allow to mature overnight.
  2. Make the prepared compound into sheets of desired thickness using a mixing mill or calendar.
  3. Prepare blanks of compounded rubber sheet equal to the size of the coir mat.
  4. Heat the mould, spray with a releasing agent, and place the rubber compound sheet and coir material inside.
  5. Press the combination in a steam or electrically heated hydraulic press at the appropriate temperature, pressure, and time.
  6. Remove the finished product from the mould, cool, and trim.

Market

There is tremendous scope for rubberized coir due to the growth of the furniture industry, high costs of foam rubber, and applications in transport, railways, and geo-textiles.
